    ἐμοὶ γὰρ οὐκέτ’ ἔστιν εἰς ὅ τι βλέπω
    πλὴν σοῦ. σὺ γάρ μοι πατρίδ’ ᾔστωσας δορί,
    καὶ μητέρ’ ἄλλη μοῖρα τὸν φύσαντά τε
    καθεῖλεν Ἅιδου θανασίμους οἰκήτορας.
    τίς δῆτ’ ἐμοὶ γένοιτ’ ἂν ἀντὶ σοῦ πατρίς;
    τίς πλοῦτος; ἐν σοὶ πᾶσ’ ἔγωγε σῴζομαι.
    ἀλλ’ ἴσχε κἀμοῦ μνῆστιν· ἀνδρί τοι χρεὼν
    μνήμην προσεῖναι, τερπνὸν εἴ τί που πάθοι.

    —Sophocles, Ajax 514-21 (Tecmessa speaking)

    Ter tecum conata loqui ter inutilis haesit
         lingua, ter in primo restitit ore sonus.
    qua licet et sequitur, pudor est miscendus amori;
         dicere quae puduit, scribere iussit amor.
    quidquid Amor iussit, non est contemnere tutum;
         regnat et in dominos ius habet ille deos.

    —Ovid, Heroides 4.7-12 (Phaedra to Hippolytus)
